ROC Simple Skills Workshop – Feedback

The recent ROC Skills Workshop was very successful. 14 attendees from non-licence holders up to experienced full license holders.
Martin M0XVN gave some informative hints and tips as well as practical demonstrations of basic and SMD (Surface-Mount Device) soldering techniques, not to mention the great advice on materials and equipment to avoid and to make sure you have to hand.

Soldering of devices using Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) is often viewed as being beyond the capabilities of many radio amateurs, so Martin’s insights on practical ways of doing so from his many years of experience were very much appreciated.

Ian 2E0GYR provided the venue at Sew and Fabric and as always, was the perfect host with snacks and drinks available to all.

DOOZY for ICOM IC-705

Do you own an ICOM IC-705 and a laptop or mini PC?
David PA7LIM, our very clever Dutch radio amateur and software developer (who gave us both the excellent PEANUT and Blue-DV applications), has developed some Windows (10 or 11) software called DOOZY that can allow you to control and use your IC-705 transceiver from your computer.
Please see David’s webpage for information:

Other Software by David PA7LIM
Here is some other great software by David (amongst the many other things he has developed).
PEANUT
With the FREE PEANUT application, you can talk with Radio Amateurs around the world via an Android device or Windows computer.
- David’s PEANUT information page (opens in new tab)
- G4WKW Talk on Digital Voice Radio & PEANUT (YouTube video opens in new tab)
BlueDV
With BlueDV Windows and an AMBE3000 you can make a QSO via your sound card. No hotspot or radio’s are needed. For around $110 (USD) / £90 (Sterling) you can make QSO’s on DMR, DSTAR and Fusion using an AMBE Server or Dongle (now also NXDN).
David’s pages on BlueDV need updating as they are out-of-date regarding his software (which now includes NXDN as well as DMR, D-STAR & Fusion):
- David’s BlueDV page (opens in new tab)
- David’s BlueDV Windows page (opens in new tab)
- David’s BlueDV Android page (opens in new tab)
- David’s BlueDV iOS page (opens in new tab)
- David’s BlueDV Linus (experimental) page (opens in new tab)
Here is a snapshot from G4WKW using D-Star on an updated version of BlueDV (Windows):

Greg & Grant DownUnder Dxers

If you would like to work VKland, the Greg & Grant Aussie DXers would love to help you!
Greg VK2GJC is a very clever chappie who has programmed some stuff to make everything as easy as possible for you! On Greg’s QRZ page you will find a DXhelper box where you can enter your callsign when you are ready to call in to them via radio:

That is a great idea and it is far nicer to have Greg call you in the pileup to give you a chance of making the contact. I have heard both of them many times and decided to call in to them this morning when conditions were not ideal. As well as emailing you a nice certificate as a PDF (snapshot of mine at start of this post), you will receive emails with nice QSL cards too:
Greg VK2GJC:

Grant VK3OZY:

and guest today, Frank VK5KV:

If you are struggling to get Australia, please give it a try on 20m from about 7:30 am local (06:30 GMT). They are especially interested in getting UK low-power stations!
You might also like to look Greg’s OnAirLogbook map, where you can see their latest QSOs:
